Who is hosting the World Cup?
Despite an ongoing feud with Pakistan over tournament boycotts, India has taken on the role of hosting the event. The discord began when India issued a threat to boycott the Pakistan-hosted Asia Cup scheduled for September. In response, Pakistan retaliated by threatening to boycott the India-hosted World Cup. This contentious situation was eventually resolved by distributing the hosting rights for the Asia Cup between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with India’s matches being relocated to Sri Lanka for the tournament.
Who is taking part?
The tournament will feature a select group of 10 teams. These include India, who secured an automatic spot as the host nation. Additionally, New Zealand, England, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and South Africa earned their positions based on their performance in ODI cricket since the 2019 World Cup. Sri Lanka and the Netherlands also secured their places by emerging victorious in a qualifying tournament held earlier this year.
Notably absent from the list of qualified teams are previous World Cup champions West Indies, as well as Ireland and Zimbabwe, who failed to secure a spot in the tournament through the qualifying process.

More Details
The 2023 Cricket World Cup is set to kick off on October 5, commencing with an exciting clash between defending champions England and last edition’s runner-up, New Zealand, at the Ahmedabad venue. The magnificent Narendra Modi Stadium will also serve as the battleground for the highly anticipated India vs. Pakistan showdown on October 14. Culminating the tournament, this colossal cricket stadium will host the final on November 19, while the two pivotal semifinal matches are scheduled for November 15 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium and November 16 at Kolkata’s historic Eden Gardens.
A total of 48 matches will unfold across ten venues, marking the fourth occasion that India has hosted ODI cricket’s flagship event and the first since the triumphant 2011 World Cup campaign on home soil. India will engage in matches at diverse locations, including Chennai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Dharamsala, Lucknow, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad once again. Surprisingly, the renowned Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, with its 55,000-seat capacity and a history of hosting numerous international matches, is the sole historic venue where India will not play a league match. Both semifinals are allocated reserve days, ensuring the tournament’s smooth progression.
Eight of the ten participating teams had already secured their spots, with the remaining two determined through the World Cup Qualifiers. The round-robin format will see each team face the other nine competitors, with the top four earning berths in the semifinals. Warm-up matches are slated from September 29 to October 3, unfolding in Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram, and Hyderabad.
Rohit Sharma’s formidable team embarks on their campaign against a formidable Australian side on October 8, commencing the action at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. Aside from clashes with Pakistan and Australia, India faces formidable challenges against New Zealand in Dharamsala and England in Lucknow, the only two teams that inflicted defeats on them during the 2019 World Cup. India had previously lost a league match to England at Edgbaston before New Zealand eliminated them with an 18-run win in the rain-interrupted semifinal at Manchester, a match that extended over 24 hours.
This revised announcement arrives two weeks after the initial schedule’s release. Previously, the World Cup schedule was expected to be unveiled during the World Test Championship final. However, the buzz surrounding it subsided as India and Australia engaged in a riveting Test at The Oval. The postponement was reportedly linked to Pakistan’s request to reschedule two of their matches, one against Australia in Bengaluru on October 20, and the other against Afghanistan in Chennai three days later. The BCCI reportedly declined these requests, as the schedule now confirms.
In contrast, the schedule for the 2019 World Cup in England was unveiled well in advance on April 18, over a year before the tournament’s May 30 commencement. This uncharacteristic delay in unveiling the 2023 World Cup schedule has led to a lack of pre-tournament buzz. For reasons yet undisclosed, the ICC and the BCCI chose to keep the schedule under wraps, contributing to the suspense surrounding the tournament.
